JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Technician 2 works in the Department of Pharmacology, Addition Science and Toxicology (PHAST) at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. This position participates in research projects focused on the responses of cerebral artery and brain ion channels to lipids, alcohol, toluene, and related drugs of misuse.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

1. Prepares all solutions and materials, including dissection of mouse/rat cerebral arteries and extraction of Xenopus laevis oocytes, that are required for electrophysiology, imaging, myogenic tone, and cranial window studies.

2. Assists with surgeries on rodents (rats, mice) and frogs (Xenopus laevis).

3. Conducts animal euthanasia, tissue collection, (rodent artery isolation; Xenopus laevis oocyte isolation), and blood collection (from rodents).

4. Breeds and maintains mouse colonies and conducts mouse genotyping.

5. Preserves breeding records and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) compliance.

6. Formulates LB agar plates and purifies plasmids while under close supervision.

7. Ensures the proper maintenance of lab space by cleaning glassware, plastic ware, surgical tools, autoclaving, washing lab coats, weekly testing of eyewash stations, keeping the lab space clean, and maintaining inventory of chemicals.

8. Validates compliance with regulatory policies and protocols.

9. Performs other related duties as assigned.
